can't hear anyone

I was trying to use mumble last night, but about 90% of the time, I couldn't hear anyone - though I could see their icons light up and they could hear me. Sometimes the sound would randomly come back on for a few seconds to a minute, but then it was back to silence. Game sounds were working, I could hear the test voices in the audio wizard. I just (usually) couldn't hear anyone else. Tried updating to the most recent version, restarting, restarting the entire computer, nothing helped. Running on a Mac, never had this problem before. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
