Headphone settings

So my friend wants to install mumble. When he runs the installer, it says that it wants to change his headphone settings. He says that he had to specifically set the settings to get them to work. He's nervous that if he installs mumble, that his headphones will no longer work. I have 2 questions. 1. If he installs mumble, will his headphones be screwed up? And 2. If his headphones no longer work after installation, will he be able to change the change the settings back without screwing mumble up?
