I clicked something and where the X appears, nothing comes up anymore.

Try to reset / load a (default) layout in your settings.

You dragged your chatbar into the left layout slot. Since it won't grow vertically unless you are typing in it some area is bound to be left empty. Just drag the bar back to the bottom or select one of the predefined layouts.
